How I Started Writing

How did I get started writing?  I’ve been writing poems, stories, books…my entire life.  When I was small, I scribbled down my thoughts, ideas, poems on scratch pads, small napkins, literally anything I could find.  When I became a mother, it was fun to write stories for my children.  I have quite a collection, so its been great fun to start publishing them.  I taught writing for many years as well.  I wrote a chapter book for young readers called “The Gravestone Gang.”  My kids inspired that book.  More on that at a later date.

I continued to write verses and poetry throughout college.  I would take my book of prose/poetry with me, when we’d all go out, and write down thoughts about the evening.  I also encouraged others to write in my journal too.  I’d pass it around.  It is a silver, bound book and contains many happy thoughts and verses detailing memorable college days and nights.  What fun to trip down memory lane throughout the many seasons of my life!

My mother loved to write too. When I was young, she encouraged me to journal and keep a diary.  She passed away, far too young, 31 years ago.  I did find some of her writing (several poems) but she told me she’d written a novel.  We were never able to find it.  I think that has served as some encouragement to start publishing my stories, children’s books.  She would be so proud.  I think she knows.
